Preparing For Your Newborn

Throughout your pregnancy, you will slowly prepare your life for when your newborn baby arrives.

At times it may seem like a never-ending task to know what is essential for both you and your baby. It is completely new territory for you and your partner so it is best to be prepared ahead of time.

You don’t want to cause any unnecessary stress on yourself. These times are supposed to be exciting and joyous which will be cherished forever.

We are here to make your job a little easier as we know how overwhelming it can be. Here is a newborn checklist to make sure you have all the essential items you will need, in the first few months of their little lives.

👕 Wardrobe Essentials

I'm sure every parent loves to find cute clothes to dress their baby in.

However, they will probably only start to fit into those certain clothes a few months after they are born.

It's better to be practical as you adjust to your new life as a mother to make things easier for you.

  • Around 8 all in-one-suits/onesies. Your newborn will typically spend the first few months living in these and don't tend to wear anything else, apart from a little vest or a cardigan over the top if it is cold.
  • Baby vests (also known as bodysuits) are very handy. You should probably have around 6 of them in their wardrobe. They can be worn under the all in one suits or on their own if its a warm day. They're great for every time of the year as they come in both short and long-sleeved versions.
  • Having a few cardigans so if it is a bit chilly outside, its an easy extra layer of clothing to pop on.
  • If you live in a very cold climate where the temperature in winter is likely to drop below freezing. A great investment for your newborn is snowsuit onesie. Perfect for keeping them warm against the wild weather.
  • A couple of cosy hats or a little summer bonnet to protect their head from the harsh climate. (this is very important if your baby is premature)
  • Non-scratch mittens so they avoid scratching themselves by accident.
  • One-piece pyjamas will also be a very essential item of clothing to have for your newborn. They will most likely live in these as well for the first few weeks.

🧸 Nursery

When you bring your little one home from the hospital, for the first few months they will be sleeping in your room.

Although having everything ready and prepared will make things a lot easier for you.

  • Moses baskets are what your baby typically sleeps in, for the first few months of their lives. It is handy having it next to your bed so on them restless nights, it is easy to reach over and feed them.
  • Swaddles are light and breathable blankets to help your baby feel as though they are secure like they were in the womb.
  • Investing in a baby monitor is great and can be moved from room to room, to help put your mind at ease while they are sleeping.
  • If you have a cot, you will need sheets and a cellular blanket. This is the best blanket for newborns as the material consists of tiny holes which allow airflow, to make sure that they are safe.
  • You will need a soft and supportive mattress that either fits the cot or Moses basket.
  • Investing in a baby monitor is great and can be moved from room to room, to help put your mind at ease while they are sleeping.
  • A changing table is obviously essential as babies do need changing at least 10-12 times a day. Having a portable changing mat can come in very handy. You can keep it in any room of the house so it allows you to change your baby, without needing to go to the changing table everytime.

🧳 Travel Gear

It is very important that your baby has a safe and effective travel gear. Being prepared for when you are out and about, will help you get some of your much-needed freedom back.

  • The first thing you should definitely invest in is a car seat for your baby. This will be needed once you are ready to leave the hospital and will the first piece of travel equipment you will need.  Safety is always a priority for this over stylish. Making sure it has a high level of protectiveness that will keep your bundle of joy safe and also happy.
  •  A pram is another thing that you will need more or less straight away. You will need your arms back at one point, and they are just easy to place your baby in, knowing that they will be safe.
  • Baby carriers are great as they keep your baby close to you at all times. They should not only be comfortable for your baby but also yourself, so investing in these are something you can both benefit from.
  • Playmats are great for your baby, once they reach a certain age in their little lives. It helps with the development of important milestones such as, grasping, rolling over, while it also stimulates their mind. They're easy to store and gives you time to do some errands around the house knowing they are safe.

🍼 Baby’s Health & Wellbeing Essentials

With a newborn comes a lot of demand for feeding time and their overall health and wellbeing. You are going to need to stock up on everything from nappies to a baby first aid kit, as accidents do happen.

  • Nappies and wet wipes! I cannot stress enough how many nappies you will need. It's best to stock up in bulk, as it will work out cheaper in the long run and you will never ever have enough of them!
  • You will need a good supply of bottles and nipples. Your baby will need around the clock feeding, regardless if you are formula or breastfeeding. Having lots of bottles and nipples at hand will make sure you will always have something to feed your little one with.
  • Having a baby bath will make bath time safer and easier. Newborns are so tiny that washing them for the first few times may seem a bit daunting but with investing in a baby bath, it will help keep you at ease.
  • Burp cloths are essential as your baby is more than likely going to experience reflux or bring up some leftover milk.
  • Formula, this will be essestinal if this is how you are going to be feeding from the get go. However if you are breastfeeding, you may still want to get some formula just incase your baby is having trouble latching, as you do not want a hungry baby.

🧖🏼‍♀️ What You Will Need For Yourself

As well as everything you need for your baby, you will need some essientals for yourself for when you become a new mummy! These will help make your life a little bit easier and also it is important to look after yourself always

  • Finding the right nursing bra will make things easier for you to breastfeed your baby. They are super comfortable and they adjust to your body aswell!
  •  Nursing pillows are great support while you are breast feeding. Its common women will expereince neck and back pain whilst breast feeding as they have to bring their baby up to their chest. Nursing pillows elimate all of the slouchiness works wonders, if you are struggling to get a good latch with your baby.
  • Running errarnds with a new born baby can seem like the most impossible task, as they are in constant need of nappy changing and feeding. Having a baby changing bag, will help stop alot of stressing wondering if you have everything you need for your little one before leaving the house. Making sure it is stocked up all the time so you wont ever run out of anything while you are out and about.
  • Nipple cream (if your breastfeeding) is highly recommended because your nipples can crack and bleed due to the amount of time your baby will spent latched onto them.
  • Breast pads are something every pregnant or new mum need to have. As your breats begin to fill with milk, you are more at risk of leaking. This then  prevents you runing your clothing as they sit inside your bra.
  • A breast pump,  will become like your wingwomen. They are great for pumping out milk, if latching is a problem. It also allows for your partner to become involved in feeding time. You can freee your breast milk and can come in handy at anytime.
