From what age can I use a baby carrier?

You can use a baby carrier from birth, provided your baby weighs at least 3.5kg (around 7lb 11oz). Below that weight, a carrier may not hold baby in the safe head, neck, and hip position required for newborns, so always check with your health visitor or paediatrician first if your baby is smaller or premature. A well-designed carrier will then grow with your child up to roughly 15kg, supporting you through the entire baby-wearing stage.

Is baby-wearing safe for newborns?

Yes, baby-wearing is safe and beneficial for newborns when the carrier is worn correctly. Follow the TICKS guidelines used by UK midwives. That stands for Tight, In view at all times, Close enough to kiss, Keep chin off chest, Supported back. Baby should sit high on your chest with their face visible and their airway clear. The ergonomic hip seat supports the wide-legged position recommended by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute.

Can I breastfeed while baby-wearing?

Yes, many mums find breastfeeding in a carrier hugely freeing. You can feed on the move during walks, while older children play, or in public without needing to find seating. Loosen the shoulder straps slightly to lower baby to chest height, latch as normal, then re-tighten the straps once baby is feeding. Always return baby to the upright "close enough to kiss" position once feeding is finished. Practise at home before trying on the go.

How long can I carry my baby in a carrier each day?

There is no strict daily time limit on baby-wearing. Many babies are content in a carrier for several hours at a stretch, particularly newborns who are soothed by movement. Take baby out for nappy changes, full feeds, and any signs of overheating or discomfort. Vary their position as they grow, alternating sides and trying different carry styles for both your comfort and theirs. If your back or shoulders start to ache, it's time for a break.

What's the difference between a baby carrier and a baby sling?

A baby carrier is a buckled, structured design with padded shoulder straps and a waistband. It's quick to put on, easy to adjust, and forgiving if you're new to baby-wearing. A baby sling is typically a single piece of stretchy or woven fabric wrapped around your body, more versatile once you've mastered it but with a steeper learning curve. Most new parents find a structured carrier the easier starting point, while slings are popular with mums who plan to wear baby daily and want maximum flexibility.
