Baby essentials you'll use every day
This is the everyday kit for a new baby: zip sleepsuits, ribbed bodysuits and leggings, sleeping bags for the cot, big bamboo muslins, a nursing pillow for feeds and the AirMesh™ carrier for when you want your hands free.
The clothes are made to layer. A bodysuit goes next to the skin and a sleepsuit zips over the top at night, and once your baby is more upright, a bodysuit and a pair of ribbed leggings make an outfit. The sleepsuits, and the outside of the sleeping bags, are 95% organic bamboo, and the bodysuits and leggings a ribbed knit of 67% bamboo with cotton, which helps them keep their shape through a lot of washing.
Bodysuits start at Newborn and leggings at 0-3 months, and the single sleepsuits go down to Tinybaby for babies up to 45cm. Our baby clothes are cut to fit up to two months longer than standard, so on the edge of two sizes, take the smaller one.
Questions, answered.
Should I buy Newborn or 0-3 months?
Some of each. Newborn fits 45 to 55cm and 0-3 months 53 to 63cm, so they overlap, and a bigger baby may go straight into 0-3 months. A few pieces in Newborn and more in 0-3 months is the safer split, and for a premature or very small baby, the single sleepsuits come in Tinybaby, up to 45cm.
How do sleepsuits, bodysuits and leggings go together?
The bodysuit is the base layer, with poppers under the nappy, and the sleepsuit zips over it at night. Once your baby's more upright, a bodysuit and ribbed leggings make a day outfit in matching colours.
What should my baby wear to sleep?
Go by the room temperature at night. At 18 to 20°C, a sleepsuit inside a 2.5 TOG sleeping bag is usually right; at 16 or 17°C, add a long-sleeve bodysuit underneath. Whatever the temperature, never put a blanket on top.
Which fabric is which?
The sleepsuits and the outside of the sleeping bags are 95% organic bamboo, GOTS certified; the bodysuits and leggings are 67% bamboo with 28% cotton, which helps the rib keep its shape; and the muslins are 70% bamboo and 30% cotton. All of them machine wash at 30 degrees, and the nursing pillow's cover zips off for the wash while the pillow itself stays out of the machine.
How many of each will I need?
Around six bodysuits in each size covers a wash cycle, because they're the layer every leak reaches first. A pack of three sleepsuits gives you one on, one in the wash and one clean in the drawer, and two pairs of leggings is usually plenty until your baby crawls, then three or four.
