When should I pack my hospital bag?

Most midwives recommend having your hospital bag ready by around 36 weeks pregnant. Babies don’t always stick to schedules, and having everything packed early helps you avoid last-minute stress if labour starts sooner than expected. Packing in advance also gives you time to remember the small comfort items you might otherwise forget, like phone chargers, snacks or lip balm. 

How many outfits should I pack for baby?

For a typical 1–2 day hospital stay, packing 3–5 baby outfits is usually perfect. Newborns can go through clothes quickly thanks to spills, leaks and temperature changes, so having a few spare sleepsuits gives you peace of mind. Include a mix of short and long sleeve options if possible, plus a special going-home outfit for that first trip outside together.

Do hospitals provide nappies?

Some hospitals provide nappies, but many don’t, and supplies can vary between wards. To avoid relying on availability, it’s best to pack your own nappies and wipes. Bringing your own means you’ll have enough to last your entire stay without needing someone to rush out and buy more.

Do I need postpartum clothes in my hospital bag?

Yes, postpartum clothing is one of the most important things to pack. After birth, your body needs time to recover, and regular clothes can feel tight, restrictive or uncomfortable. Soft, high-waisted and stretchy clothing designed for postpartum recovery will feel much better, especially if you’ve had stitches, swelling or a C-section. 

Are maternity pads good to use after delivery?

Absolutely! Maternity pads are essential for postpartum recovery. They are much more absorbent than standard sanitary pads and provide the comfort and protection needed to manage post-birth bleeding (lochia). Most women go through at least 2-3 packs in the first few days, so having plenty on hand is a good idea. You can also invest in some good maternity knickers that are reusable, with a built in pad for added comfort.
