Our baby gate pressure-fits openings from 76 to 83cm, with no drilling, and it's made for doorways and the bottom of the stairs, not the top.
It opens both ways with one hand, then swings shut and latches behind you. The frame is metal, and it's tested to EN 1930:2011.
Upstairs, a window restrictor stops a window at the gap you choose and sticks on with 3M™ VHB adhesive, and a door handle lock keeps a lever handle from being pushed down, so the door stays shut until you open it. Can I put the gate at the top of the stairs?
No. It's a pressure-fit gate, and for the top of the stairs RoSPA and nidirect both advise a gate that screws into the wall.
Will the gate fit my stairs?
It fits openings from 76 to 83cm wide, so measure at the height the gate will sit before you order. It needs two flat, solid surfaces facing each other to press against, and skirting boards, curved bannister spindles and plasterboard all affect the grip; a bannister usually needs an adapter to give the gate something flat to push on.
How do I know the gate is fitted securely?
Push firmly against the top and the bottom of the gate: the frame shouldn't move and no gap should open at either side. Pressure-fit gates loosen a little with daily use, so give it the same push once a week and re-tighten the fittings at the first sign of movement.
How far should an upstairs window open?
For child safety in the UK, the usual guide is less than 100mm, so set the restrictor to the smallest gap that still gives you the air you want. Make sure every adult in the house knows how to release it, as a window can be a way out in a fire.
