Stairs are the single biggest fall hazard in any UK home with a baby or toddler. The Child Accident Prevention Trust reports thousands of A&E visits each year from stair-related falls in the under-5 age group, with most injuries occurring when a crawling baby reaches an unsecured staircase. The RoSPA recommends gates at both the top and bottom of stairs, installed before baby is fully mobile.

When should I install stair gates?

Stair gates should be installed before your baby becomes mobile, typically by 6 months. The RoSPA recommends gates at both the top and bottom of stairs. Top-of-stairs gates must be screw-fitted (not pressure-mounted) for safety, while bottom gates can use pressure mounting. Don't wait until baby is already crawling because mobility can develop suddenly.

What's the difference between pressure-fit and screw-fit stair gates?

Pressure-fit gates use tension to wedge between walls and install without screws, making them ideal for doorways and bottom-of-stairs use. Screw-fit gates fix into the wall with brackets and are the only safe option at the top of stairs, where a pressure-fit could be dislodged with force. The RoSPA does not recommend pressure-fit gates at the top of any staircase.

Can I use stair gates with banister rails?

Yes, banister-fit kits adapt screw-fit stair gates to attach to round wooden banisters without damaging the wood or wall. Most major safety gate brands sell compatible banister adaptors. This is the recommended approach for period homes where drilling into walls is not desirable.

At what age can children safely use stairs alone?

Most children can navigate stairs safely from around 2 to 3 years old, although the RoSPA recommends supervised stair use until at least age 4. Removable safety gates allow you to keep stairs secured at night or during nap times even after toddlers are confident on stairs during the day. Continue to teach safe stair use from when toddlers first start climbing.
