A no-drill baby gate for doorways and the bottom of the stairs
Once your baby starts crawling, the kitchen door and the foot of the stairs are often the first places you want to close off. This baby gate pressure-fits into the opening, so there's no drilling and no holes in the wall, which also makes it a good choice if you rent.
Fitting it takes about five minutes and no DIY skills. You set the width, stand it in the opening and tighten the pressure fittings until the frame is firm. Once it's up it feels solid, even with a toddler leaning on it.
It opens both ways with one hand (press and lift), so you can get through with a baby on your hip. Then it swings shut and latches behind you, so it's never left open by accident. The latch is easy for an adult and too stiff for small hands.
The frame is metal, and the gate is tested to EN 1930:2011, the European standard for child safety barriers.

Will it fit my doorway or stairs?
It fits openings from 76cm to 83cm wide, so measure at the height the gate will sit before you order. It needs two flat, solid surfaces facing each other to press against. Skirting boards, curved bannister spindles and plasterboard all affect the grip, and a bannister usually needs an adapter to give the gate something flat to push on.
Can I use it at the top of the stairs?
It's made for doorways and the bottom of the stairs. For the top of the stairs, RoSPA and nidirect both advise a gate that screws into the wall.
How do I know it's fitted securely?
Push firmly against the top and the bottom of the gate: the frame shouldn't move and no gap should open at either side. Pressure-fit gates loosen a little with daily use, so give it the same push once a week and re-tighten the fittings at the first sign of movement.
Does it close by itself?
Yes. It swings shut and latches on its own, so it isn't left open on the one occasion it matters. Near a room where your baby's asleep, guide it closed with your hand and it shuts quietly.

Yes, it's tested to EN 1930:2011, the European safety standard for child safety barriers in the home. The one-handed latch is made stiff enough that a toddler can't work it.
