Postpartum essentials for recovery and feeding

The weeks after the birth are about healing and feeding, often both at once. This range covers the two: high-waisted postpartum knickers and leggings that keep clear of a C-section incision, recovery belts, a peri bottle, nursing bras and pillows, breast pumps and milk storage bags, and a baby carrier for when you're up and about.

For knickers, our Postpartum Knickers come up high, above the incision line, and keep a maternity pad in place in the first days; the C-section Knickers are the low-rise pair, cut to sit below it. For support, the Comfort+ belt gives a light, adjustable hold and the Support+ belt is our firmest, and both come with our Postpartum Book of exercises for your core and pelvic floor.

For feeding, the Maternity Bra unclips with one hand, the Nursing Sleep Bra has a crossover front with nothing to undo at night, and the Pumping Bra holds the flanges so your hands are free.

After a C-section, check with your midwife or GP before you wear a belt or anything with compression, and ideally wait until your six-week check. The Postpartum Knickers are the exception: they're soft enough to wear over a dressing from the first days.

Questions, answered.

What will I need in the first few days?

High-waisted postpartum knickers, with maternity pads in them while the bleeding is heaviest, a soft nursing bra that opens for feeds, and a peri bottle so you can rinse instead of wiping. Pack them in your hospital bag, as the knickers and the peri bottle are both things you'll want within hours of the birth.

Which postpartum knickers should I choose?

For the first weeks, the high-waisted Postpartum Knickers are made for the job: they sit above a C-section incision and hold a maternity pad. If you'd rather the waistband sat low, the C-section Knickers are cut to sit below the incision line instead. The Postpartum Thong is for later, once the heavy bleeding has settled and you're back in leggings. All of them come up small, so go a size up.

Which postpartum belt is right for me?

The Comfort+ belt gives light, even support that you loosen or tighten with its Velcro and crossover straps. The Support+ belt is our firmest, with stronger compression, which suits you if you're on your feet a lot or a softer belt didn't feel like enough. Neither will close a gap in your tummy muscles on its own, and after a C-section, check with your midwife or GP before you start wearing one.

Which nursing bra should I choose?

Our Maternity Bra is the everyday one: soft and wire-free, with clips that drop each cup for a feed. The Nursing Sleep Bra has a crossover front for nights, the Support+ Maternity Bra gives firmer support for a fuller bust, the Pumping Bra holds the flanges if you express a lot, and the Nursing Sports Bra is for running and classes.

Single or double breast pump?

If you're pumping most days, the double saves time, because doing both sides at once takes about half as long as one after the other. For the occasional bottle so someone else can do a feed, the single is plenty. Either way, breast pumps can't be returned once they're opened, for hygiene reasons, so check the flange sizes before you order.
