Match it to the room, not the season outdoors. 0.5 TOG suits rooms above 24°C, 1.0 TOG suits 20 to 24°C, 1.5 TOG bridges the gap in spring and autumn, 2.5 TOG suits the 16 to 20°C the NHS recommends for a nursery, and 3.5 TOG is for rooms below 16°C. We make all five. Most UK families find a 1.0 and a 2.5 cover the whole year between them, so a thermometer in the room is more useful than guessing.
Snugly, and this is the most important safety point. The neck opening should sit close enough that your baby cannot slip down inside the bag, and the armholes should be close without restricting movement. If you can pull the bag over your baby's head with the zip closed, it is too big. Size by the height range on the product rather than age alone. Our bags come in 0-9M, 9-18M and 18-36M.
Once they are big enough that the neck fits closely. Our smallest bag is 0-9M with a 10cm neck width, 31cm chest and 70cm length, so smaller newborns may need a few weeks before it sits safely. The test is simple: with the zip closed, you should not be able to pull the bag over your baby's head. Both the NHS and The Lullaby Trust recommend sleeping bags over loose blankets, because they cannot be kicked off or ride up over the face.
Yes, and it is the detail that makes night changes manageable. The QikZip™ two-way zip opens from the bottom, so you can change a nappy from the feet end while the bag stays on and your baby stays warm and half asleep. The poppers give easy access at the shoulder end too. Nothing needs to come fully off, which is the difference between a two-minute change and a fully woken baby.
Work from the room temperature. At 16 to 20°C in a 2.5 TOG bag, a long sleeve bodysuit under a sleepsuit is usually right. At 21 to 24°C in a 1.0 TOG bag, a short sleeve bodysuit under a sleepsuit works. Never add a blanket on top of a sleeping bag. Check your baby's chest or the back of the neck rather than hands or feet, which run cooler than the rest of the body normally.

    Useful during

    The two-way zip is particularly useful during sleepy nappy changes. The colour is slightly softer than it looked on screen, which I actually prefer. The fit allows plenty of movement without looking baggy.

    Useful with a few caveats. Soft with room to wriggle

    The colour is not quite what I pictured from the photos, although the fabric feels lovely. The two-way zip is particularly useful during sleepy nappy changes. It has been washed repeatedly and still looks smart.
