Baby clothes and baby proofing for 6 to 12 months
Once your baby starts to move about, the shopping changes with them. Alongside our zip sleepsuits, ribbed bodysuits and leggings in 6-9m and 9-12m, this page has sleeping bags and the first baby proofing: a baby gate, magnetic cupboard locks and a lock for lever door handles.
The ribbed leggings stay up over a nappy through crawling, and the rib springs back instead of bagging at the knees. Clothes and sleeping bags go by fit rather than age, so check the size guide on each.
The gate pressure-fits openings from 76 to 83cm, and the magnetic cupboard locks and the door handle lock stick on, so there's no drilling.
Questions, answered.
What size does my baby need at 6 to 12 months?
Go by length rather than age. Our 6-9m sleepsuit fits 63 to 71cm and 9-12m fits 68 to 76cm, and each product's size guide gives the lengths for bodysuits and leggings. If your baby is on the edge of two sizes, take the smaller one.
When should my baby move up to the 9-18M sleeping bag?
Go by the fit at the neck and chest rather than the age on the label. The 9-18M has a 35cm chest and a 12cm neck, against 31cm and 10cm on the 0-9M. The neck should sit close enough that your baby can't slip down inside, so if you can pull the opening up over their chin without effort, the bigger bag is still too big.
When should I fit a gate and cupboard locks?
Before your baby starts crawling is easiest, so everything is in place before you need it. Plan an afternoon: the adhesive on the locks needs 24 hours to set before you rely on it, and the gate takes about five minutes to fit.
Can I use the gate at the top of the stairs?
No. It's a pressure-fit gate for doorways and the bottom of the stairs; for the top, RoSPA and nidirect advise one that screws into the wall.
How much is delivery?
Standard UK delivery is £3.99, or free over £40. The Baby Gate is sent as a large item by DPD at £5.99, which free delivery doesn't cover.
