Socket covers that stick over the socket, with nothing pushed into it
Once your baby is crawling, the sockets at floor level are right in front of them. These covers fix over the sockets you're not using, so a curious baby finds a smooth cover rather than the holes.
They work differently from the push-in covers you may have seen. Nothing goes into the socket: the cover sticks to the socket's face with 3M™ adhesive, so the shutters built into a UK socket are left untouched. To take one off, push a plug's pins into the pin-shaped holes on the front and pull. Quick for an adult, and not something small fingers can manage.
There are 12 in a pack. Fit them to a clean, dry socket and let the adhesive bond before you rely on them.

How are these different from push-in socket covers?
Push-in covers put plastic pins into the socket, and Electrical Safety First warns that some can be misused to open the shutters that protect a UK socket. These don't go into the socket at all. The cover sticks to the socket's face, so the shutters are untouched, and the only way to take it off is with a plug.
How do I take one off to use the socket?
Push the pins of any UK plug into the three pin-shaped holes on the front of the cover and pull it away from the socket. It comes off in one movement for an adult, and small fingers can't get the same grip.
How many do I need?
Count the unused sockets your child can reach, usually the ones at floor level in the rooms where they play. Sockets behind a sofa or a bed are already out of the way. A pack of 12 covers most homes, and you can move a cover to a new socket once your child stops being interested.
Do I need socket covers in a UK home?
UK sockets made to BS 1363 have shutters built in that stay closed unless an earth pin goes in first, so a socket in good condition is protected by design. These covers add a barrier on top without touching those shutters, which is the point of the stick-on design. They suit floor-level sockets, older sockets and anywhere you'd rather a curious baby found a flat cover.
What if a socket is damaged?
Don't cover it. A cracked, loose or scorched socket needs an electrician to look at it.
