Postpartum recovery wear for the first weeks after the birth

The first weeks after the birth mean bleeding, feeds round the clock and, after a C-section, an incision to keep clear of waistbands. Our postpartum knickers and leggings both come up high, so the waistband sits above the usual incision line rather than on it, and the knickers' three-layer gusset is made for postpartum bleeding.

The Nursing Sleep Bra has a crossover front, so for a night feed you move it aside with nothing to unclip in the dark, and the peri bottle lets you rinse with warm water instead of wiping. The recovery belt gives light, adjustable support across your tummy; it's the earlier version of our Comfort+ belt, and as it's discontinued, it can't be returned.

Knickers can't be returned once opened, and nor can peri bottles, for hygiene reasons. The knickers come up small, so take one size up from your usual.

Questions, answered.

What helps most in the first two weeks?

Soft, high-waisted knickers that hold a maternity pad without pressing on an incision or stitches, a peri bottle so you can rinse instead of wiping, and a bra you can feed in at night without fiddling with clips. Loose, soft layers are kinder than anything with a firm waistband.

What is a peri bottle for?

Rinsing with warm water when you use the toilet after the birth, instead of wiping. The water dilutes the urine as it passes, and a rinse afterwards leaves you clean without rubbing anything sore. Pack it in your hospital bag, as the first time you'll want it is within hours of the birth.

When can I start wearing a recovery belt?

After a straightforward vaginal birth, within the first few days if it feels comfortable. After a C-section, wait until your wound has healed, usually around your six week check, and stop if it pulls at your incision, feels sharp or causes numbness. A belt can make moving about feel more supported, but it won't close a gap in your tummy muscles on its own.

Can I wear the leggings after a C-section?

Yes, once your wound has healed, and ideally after your six week check, since they have compression built in. The front sits well above the usual incision line, so no seam rests on it. If they pull at the incision or you feel any numbness, take them off and speak to your midwife or GP.

How many pairs of knickers will I need?

More than usual, because you'll change often while you're bleeding, which can go on for two to six weeks. Five to seven pairs means the washing never becomes urgent.
