The things standard cupboard locks cannot: fridges, freezers, ovens, bins, toilet seats, and cupboards or drawers where the door and frame do not line up neatly enough for a magnetic catch. There are eight in a pack and each one trims to length, so you can fit them to awkward gaps and around handles rather than being stuck with a fixed size.
Each strap is tested to withstand a 30kg pull force, which is well beyond what a toddler can generate and enough to keep a fridge or a bin firmly closed against a determined effort. The limiting factor is almost never the strap itself but the adhesive underneath it, so surface preparation matters more than anything else you can do.
Yes on a clean fridge door, which is smooth and ideal. Textured, painted or porous surfaces hold far less reliably, and that is the main cause of a strap letting go. Clean the area with something that leaves no residue, let it dry completely, press firmly and then leave it a full 24 hours before testing. Avoid fitting straight onto a warm appliance surface.
The 3M™ adhesive is designed to release without damaging the surface underneath, so removal is straightforward. The fixing itself is not usually reusable once removed, because the adhesive loses its grip after the first application. If you expect to move a strap around, it is worth buying a pack with spare capacity rather than planning to reposition the same one.
They do different jobs. Magnetic locks sit hidden inside the cupboard and leave the kitchen looking normal, which is why most people use them for the bulk of their cupboards. Straps are visible but far more flexible, handling appliances, bins and any door that a magnetic catch cannot align with. Most homes end up with locks as the default and straps for the handful of awkward cases.
