A childproof lock for lever door handles, with no drilling

Toddlers work out door handles quickly, and once they have, every room in the house is open to them. This lock fits standard lever handles and stops the handle being pushed down, so the door stays shut until an adult releases it.

For you, it's a quick slide to release, and the action is beyond most small children. The same slide turns it off when you don't need it, so the door works normally until you slide it back.

It's stronger than you'd expect from something that sticks on, and there are two in the box.

Will it fit my door handles?

It's made for standard lever handles, the most common type in UK homes. It won't fit round doorknobs, and handles with an unusual shape or a very short lever are worth measuring first; for doors with knobs, a gate across the doorway is the more practical option.

How does it work?

It locks the lever with a simple slide, so the handle can't be pushed down to open the door. You release it in a second, and that matters, because a lock that's awkward for adults tends to get taken off.

Which doors are worth locking?

Any door to somewhere you wouldn't want a toddler on their own: the kitchen, the bathroom, a utility room with cleaning products, a home office full of cables, and doors to the garage or garden. The bathroom is the one people most often forget, and it's where the water, the medicines and the cleaning products are.

Does it need drilling or tools?

No. It sticks on without drilling or screws and comes off without lasting damage to the door or handle, so it suits a rented home.

Can my child learn to open it?

Some will, eventually, which is why a lock shouldn't be the only thing between a child and a hazard. It stops the everyday, opportunistic door opening and buys you time, so keep medicines and cleaning products high up and out of reach as well.

We keep reaching for it. No more trapped fingers
