It depends on your sockets. UK sockets made to BS 1363 already have built-in shutters that block the live and neutral holes unless an earth pin is inserted first, so a modern socket in good condition is already protected by design. Covers are most useful on older or non-standard sockets, extension leads, outdoor sockets, and for parents who simply want the added reassurance of a physical barrier.
Extension leads and trailing sockets are the strongest case, since these sit at floor level exactly where a crawling baby explores and are often older than the fixed sockets in the wall. Older properties with sockets predating current standards are the other clear case. For modern wall sockets behind furniture, your effort is usually better spent on cupboards, stairs and windows.
They push straight into the socket and pull out again, with no tools and nothing to install. Check after fitting that a cover sits flush and cannot be worked loose by small fingers, and check periodically that none have cracked, since a damaged cover is worth replacing rather than leaving in place.
Count the sockets a child can actually reach, which is usually fewer than the total in the house. Sockets behind a sofa or a bed are effectively already protected. The ones that matter are at floor level in rooms where your child plays, plus any extension leads, which people routinely forget when counting.
More important than covers are the things around the socket. Keep trailing cables tucked away or clipped down, since a pulled cable brings down whatever is attached to it. Do not overload extension leads. Check that your consumer unit has RCD protection, which is the single most effective electrical safety measure in any home and does far more than any socket accessory can.

    Sit flush

    They sit flush in the sockets and are not easy for little fingers to remove. The pack covered all the unused sockets downstairs. It feels like good value for money.
