Bathroom child safety for cupboards, the toilet and the door
The bathroom is where the water, the medicines and the cleaning products are, and it's the room people most often forget to baby proof. This page covers the main jobs: magnetic locks for the cupboard, straps for the toilet seat, a lock for the door handle and a restrictor for the window.
The magnetic locks fit inside the cupboard, so nothing shows from the outside, and the door only opens when you hold the magnetic key against it. A strap works where a lock can't, on a toilet seat or a door that a catch won't line up with, and each one is tested to a 30kg pull.
Everything fixes with adhesive, so there's no drilling into tiles, and none of it replaces staying with your child in the bath.
Questions, answered.
What should I lock in a bathroom?
The cupboard with the medicines and cleaning products, the toilet seat and the door. A lock buys you time rather than being the only barrier, so keep medicines and cleaning products high up and out of reach as well.
Will the adhesive hold in a steamy bathroom?
It holds best on a clean, dry, smooth surface, so wipe the spot, let it dry fully and leave the adhesive 24 hours before you test it. Gloss and laminate hold better than painted or textured doors, and it's worth checking the fixings now and then, because steam can loosen them.
Can a strap keep the toilet seat shut?
Yes. The straps work on toilet seats, bins and fridges, and you trim each one to the length you need.
Will the door handle lock fit my bathroom door?
It's made for standard lever handles, the most common type in UK homes. It won't fit round doorknobs, and handles with an unusual shape or a very short lever are worth measuring first.
What if I lose the magnetic key?
There are two keys in the box, and we sell replacements in pairs, each with a wall mount. Keep one high up in each room where you've fitted locks, well out of your child's reach.
