Newborn fits babies 45 to 55cm long and 0-3 months fits 53 to 63cm, so a bigger baby may go straight into 0-3 months. For premature or very small babies, the single sleepsuits come in Tinybaby, up to 45cm.

Around six bodysuits in each size covers a wash cycle, since they're the layer every leak reaches first. Sleepsuits go through the wash fast in the early months too, and splitting what you buy between the size your baby's in now and the next one up works better than stocking up on one.

At 18 to 20°C, a sleepsuit inside a 2.5 TOG sleeping bag is usually right, once the bag's neck fits closely; until it does, use a light swaddle or a sheet tucked in below the shoulders. Lay your baby on their back with their feet at the foot of the cot, with no loose blanket and no hat indoors.

Short sleeve works all year under a sleepsuit and on its own on warm days; long sleeve is the warmer choice for winter. If a size will last your baby across two seasons, a mix is the safer buy.
