A peanut ball for comfortable labour positions, even in bed
If you're lying down in labour, whether by choice or because you've had an epidural, keeping your top leg in a comfortable position between contractions takes effort. A peanut ball holds it for you: lie on your side and rest your leg over it, or slot it between your knees.
The peanut shape is steadier than a round ball, and you can sit on it or lean over it as well.

What is a peanut ball for in labour?
It holds your legs in a comfortable position while you lie on your side, so you can rest between contractions without holding them there yourself. It's especially useful if you've had an epidural and need to stay in bed. Midwives use them, and having your own means you're not relying on one being free; check with your midwife or birth centre about bringing your own.
How is it different from a birthing ball?
A birthing ball is for sitting upright and moving your hips. A peanut ball is mostly for lying down, holding your legs in position while you rest. They do different jobs at different points, which is why plenty of people bring both.
What size is it?
It's 50cm, which suits most people in labour. How firm you make it matters more than the size: firm enough to hold your top leg up without sinking, but not so hard that it feels rigid between your knees. If it feels too big, let a little air out.
How do I inflate it?
Let it warm to room temperature, then inflate it in stages and leave it to relax before topping it up the next day. Do it well before your due date, around when you pack your hospital bag, so it's ready rather than one more job in early labour. Can I use it after the birth?
Yes. It's comfortable between your knees when you sleep on your side in the weeks after the birth, and it supports you lying on your side to feed.
